Grandview Neighborhood in Canada’s Vancouver, British Columbia

Geographical Location

Grandview is similar to the bordering Mount Pleasant and takes the shape of a rectangle. The zigzag southern boundary runs along the Clark Drive and the East 16th Avenue all the way to the Victoria Drive that is located eastwards. The Venable Street is located to the north, Clark Drive to the west and towards east is the Nanaimo Street.

Historical Information

Initially, this neighborhood was mainly an industrial area featuring sawmills and breweries. Commercial, industrial and residential buildings are all featured in this neighborhood. Although most of the residences here were built before 1946, the year 2000 ushered in a new wave that saw the construction of low and mid class family houses. Instead of replacing old heritage buildings with new ones, this neighborhood focuses on renovation to give Grandview an appealing look without starting from scratch. The current Commercial Drive was initially known as Park Drive before it became a path for business. Between the 50s to the 60s, many young families moved into this neighborhood.

Education in Grandview Neighborhood

It is the young families that live in Grandview neighborhood that mainly benefit from the area’s education system. In addition to the private schools, the area boasts 7 elementary schools and 3 secondary schools. The former mainly comprise of Queen Alexandra, Britannia, Grandview, Lord Nelson, Laura Second, Queen Victoria Annex and the Tyee Elementary schools. The latter comprise Gladstone, Britannia and Templeton secondary schools. The St. Josephs School and Stratford Hall are some of the private schools found in this neighborhood. The Vancouver Community and Langara Colleges as well as UBC provide tertiary or post-secondary education. The excellent public transport system in the neighborhood ensures students can get to and from school easily.

Population Demographics

As a mid-class residential area, couples, singles, young families and the aged all live in this neighborhood. In 2006, the population of this neighborhood was about 28,000. The major languages spoken in order of superiority are English, Chinese, French, Spanish, Italian and Tagalog. The annual average income per household is about $35,000. The rate of unemployment is approximately 8%. The majority of the residents are between the ages twenty and thirty nine.
