Coal harbor is located in the downtown peninsula of Vancouver. In the early 1990s, it was first established as an upscale district of high rise condominium. It was after coal was found in the area in 1862 that it was named Coal Harbor. It lies next to the southern shoreline and sandwiched between the financial district towards the south and Burrard Inlet towards the east. It is the home to various prestigious real estates in Vancouver and as a result of its rapid development, it has grown into a thriving neighborhood that features high class hotels, terminals for cruise ships, a floating gas station used by the marines, skyscrapers, Water Aerodrome of Vancouver Harbor as well as float plane jetties among others.
The Deadman Island, Lumbermanâ€™s Arch and Brockton Point feature some prominent settlements. Coal was discovered in the harbor in 1862. Various cherry trees were planted in the harbor in memorial of several people who died as a result of AIDS infection. Hawaiians, also known as Kanakas, were settled in the Devonian Harborside Park that was initially referred to as the Cherry Orchard or the Kanaka Rancherie. Initially the harbor was mainly composed of empty lots that have been developed into beautiful high rise homes.
Apart from being a secure neighborhood, Coal Harbor features various schools in the surrounding areas. Lord Roberts Annex and Elementary as well as King George Secondary are located in the West End that is close-by.Â BCIT Downtown CampusÂ and SFU Harbor Center found close to Waterfront Stations are some of the post-secondary educational institutions around.
